You found that it is time to sell your website
Lets discuss the various factors that can help you get fully prepared when selling your online business. Your website has reached an impasse. It is still growing at a good pace. You simply want to move on and now is the time you want to sell.
The decision to sell – People decide to sell their online businesses for many different reasons. My experience shows that the main reason is because of a failed goal or purpose, of some sort. Sellers are not happy when he or she has not been making it to their satisfaction or their original goal has not being achieved. Other times they do not have the time to dedicate to a blog or site and it is successful but needs more time dedicated to it to move to the next level. Another truly legitimate reason is if a business owner’s health is going down hill. Lastly, sometimes it is just time to retire, and play golf or travel. Whatever your reason, it is important to identify exactly what the reason is that you want to sell your business, and to be totally honest with yourself and others on this point. The reason you might be selling does not adversely affect the selling price, but it may help the marketing activities, for the agent and make the final negotiations go easier. People really like to understand why a seller wants to get out, and they are perceptive if you are lying on that point.
Who you should not try selling it to – When people think about selling their business, they often think of selling it to their competitors or employees. This is actually not a good idea. A competitor’s value of your business is based entirely on advantages they would be achieving, if you were not in business and therefore not hindering the expansion of their business. They look at what the net effect would be if they owned your resources.
What people will look for when buying your website
a) Is it growing with traffic.
b) Does the site make MONEY. Is there a verified amount. I gauge my sites to sell for 12 months worth of documented revenue from affiliate programs and other advertising methods and means.
c) Visit places in the selling market and learn from what is selling other peoples websites. Your buyer is potentially visiting places like. Sitepoint.com and others.
d) Other things will matter to the potential buyer. Be through in building your blog or website. When you sell they want documentation.
e) Be sure to have a viable place to broker the deal. Use a escrow service. This is a safer middle ground service that a buyer or seller will need.
f)Most buyers do not want a personal website. These are difficult to sell. Keep the name in a viable niche that is not saturated and has a generic domain name or part of what your site is about. These are what buyers consider in a purchase.
This is no way all the things that a buyer will look for but it is a place to start when considering the sale of your website. Educate yourself by checking out the market. Remember that all business people have and entry and exit strategy. Good luck in selling your website.
